The first game: The Senseless City.
In this town, Lu Chu was the only one who couldn’t see.
Since the day he was born, he had been facing the surprised stares from those around him.
“Being unable to see…… what’s that?”
“There are people that can’t see things?”
“Sorry, our hospital has never seen such a precedent.”
“You…… you really can’t see? The sky is blue, the grass the green, blood is red……”
“En.” Lu Chu gave a gentle smile, “can’t see it.”
Just like this, he lived for twenty-one years.
Till this day, there would still be people who were surprised and curious about the fact that he couldn’t see, and they couldn’t understand what it felt like.
The world was a dark black — no, wrong. How could someone who couldn’t see know that the curtain in front of their eyes was black?
But Lu Chu was used to it.
He had felt pain before, and he felt like a freak in this town. As far as he knew, even if there was a major accident, and they struck their heads, no one ever had this strange symptom of ‘blindness’.
But he was also grateful for the fact that his parents had given him endless love and care.
Although, when he was sixteen, they died of an accident.
That year, his parents suddenly fell sick, and it came down violently, without any warning.
“A-Chu, live on, well, understand?” They said.
“Swear you will!” His tearful mother had yelled hysterically.
Lu Chu’s tears also couldn’t help but fall, “I swear, I will, live a long life.”
Lu Chu had already become accustomed to a life where he couldn’t see, and he has a cute guide dog, and of course, he was the only one in the whole town. His parents had specially spent three years training the dog for him.
The town where he lived in was peaceful.
Generally, the buildings in town weren’t tall, and most of them were about three of four stories high, with the tallest building being the tower in the centre of the town. The tower was very tall, and from the fourth floor onwards, there weren’t any windows. Black, dark, and pointing towards the sky, it always reminded Lu Chu of Sun Wukong’s weapon that reached towards the heavens. 1Actual words: 定海神针(ding hai shen zhen). Sun Wukong’s weapon in journey to the west, also more commonly known as 如意金箍棒 (Rúyì Jīngū Bàng).
According to the old man in town, nobody had gone there before.
But he could only hear about everything.
He couldn’t see.
This place seemed as if it was isolated from the world, there weren’t many foreigners, and life was very peaceful and pleasant.
But recently, Lu Chu felt as if he had been followed by a stranger.
Since his parents died, he had always been living alone.
This town wasn’t big, the roads weren’t complicated, and when his parents were still alive, they used to take him on foot to walk through the streets of this town, then squat down and said to him in a gentle manner, “with your sense of touch, you have to remember these paths. So, even if we’re gone, and even if there’s no Carrot, you can find your way home, understand?”
Every month, they would use a whole day to walk the streets twice, and as they talked, his parents would say to him, “on your left, there’s a large supermarket with many daily necessities and food. We’ll usually go to this place when we need to buy things. On the right, there’s a flower shop with colourful flowers, and it’s very beautiful. In front of the flower shop, there’s a clinic. Although it can’t be compared to the only big hospital in town, but there have all the basic treatment equipment and medication, and it can be considered quite complete, so many people in town will come here to see the doctor……”
His parents loved him very much, and little by little, they brought him to ‘see’ the entire world.
They taught him recognise words, the ones that ordinary people learned.
They would carve the word into a protruding shape and let him touch it.
— “A-Chu, imagine. Imagine these words in your mind.”
Everything he knew, all came from his gentle and patient parents.
After his parents had died, he would still walk along the streets of the town every month.
Sometimes, even without the help of Carrot.
Carrot was his guide dog, and the only one in town. Perhaps because he wanted to see such colours, he was used to naming his favourite things their colour. He always felt that the Carrot that accompanied him had bright red fur, just like a carrot in the eyes of others, so his guide dog had such a name. However, his parents had once said that Carrot’s colour was actually dark brown.
But who knew.
Sometimes, he felt as if he didn’t need a guide dog, and just needed a companion.
Today, as always, he was strolling through the streets of the town as he made his way home.
Carrot was excited the whole way through.
However, Lu Chu wasn’t as indifferent as he seemed on the surface. He felt as if he was being followed again — because he couldn’t see, he was extremely sensitive in other ways, such as his hearing, smell, and perception.
Just as he walked home calmly and took out a key to open the door, he suddenly stopped.
He inclined his head, and heard bits and pieces of broken-up sounds — if it wasn’t for his keen hearing, he wouldn’t have realised it.
There was no malice.
From young, Lu Chu had always been aware of people’s emotions. It was hard to describe that kind of subtle feeling, he obviously couldn’t see it, but he could always detect other people’s emotions from the sound of their breathing.
“Do you want, to come in and sit down?” Lu Chu gave a warm smile and talked to the air, but his smile made people’s hearts unconsciously soften.
Lu Chu felt that man’s breath had frozen for a second.
Lu Chu stood there, unmoving, and Carrot also sat down and shook his tail, his tongue sticking out as he panted.
For a moment, they were surrounded by silence.
After another moment, the man came out from the shadows of the stairs and said, “en.”
Carrot noticed someone approaching and immediately stood up, forelimbs on the ground as his body pressed low as he barked at the man, ferociously baring his fangs.
“Carrot.” Lu Chu’s soft voice sounded.
Hearing Lu Chu’s voice, Carrot stopped barking and went to the man, circled around him warily and sniffed. Finally, he returned back to Lu Chu, but was still growling in his throat.
Inside the house, Lu Chu felt around the kitchen with familiarity, poured two glasses of water and walked back to the living room.
Lu Chu placed the water down in front of the man and smiled apologetically, “please make do with this, there’s no other drink at home.”
The man didn’t speak.
“You’re not from around here, are you?” Lu Chu didn’t mind the man’s taciturn and continued to ask.
After a long silence again, Carrot was standing in the middle of the living room, chasing his tail round and round. The occasional howl made the atmosphere much less embarrassing.
Lu Chu gave a small smile when he listened to Carrot’s movements, and kept talking to the man, “this is the first time I’ve seen a foreigner. I’m Lu Chu, what’s your name?”
“You like to smile.” The man suddenly spoke in an abrupt manner, but it had nothing to do with what Lu Chu had asked.
Lu Chu froze for a moment, slightly concealed his sightless eyes, then said with his eyebrows slightly bent, “why not smile?”
The man really didn’t speak much. Lu Chu reached out to press the clock beside him, and stood up when he heard the time — it was time to cook. Behind him, the man followed and stood near the kitchen door, not too far and not too close, silently staring at Lu Chu.
Lu Chu smiled, and his voice was soft, “what why?”
“Did you let me come in.”
Aren’t you afraid I have bad intentions towards you?
Things like cooking, Lu Chu’s parents had trained him since he was young. Everything in the house was placed in a fixed position, and after a long time, even if he couldn’t see, Lu Chu was familiar with the location of these foods, and was able to cook with ease.
Now, he took out vegetables from the refrigerator, and said as he washed and cut the vegetables, “even though I’m blind, my ears are really sharp. You’ve been following me for more than a day or two, and if you really had bad intentions towards me, you would have long made a move. If you wanted to get something from me — although I don’t know if I have anything desirable, but at least I’ll be safe until you get it. In any case, I’m blind, and if you really wanted to do something against me, it’ll be useless even if I hid.”
After that, he placed the cut vegetables on a plate and asked, smiling, “can you eat coriander?”
The man said, “en.”
While they were eating, the atmosphere was still quiet, and the man suddenly said, “7.”
A number? Lu Chu slightly tilted his head, and found it a little strange.
But Lu Chu didn’t say out the doubts in his head, and instead, he gave a warm smile, “okay, I understand.”
“I forgot.” The man seemed to have understood his doubts, and said indifferently, “my original name.”
Everybody had secrets.
Lu Chu was still smiling, “it doesn’t matter, I’ll wait for you to remember.”
Having said that, he lowered his head to eat, Carrot was lying at his feet with his own little bowl and eating happily, yet didn’t forget to look up at the man from time to time, eyes filled with vigilance.
The translator has this to add:
New story! It’s a horror + supernatural + unlimited flow story.
Unlimited flow generally refers to the main characters going through different worlds (but not transmigrating) as they try to complete tasks to usually get out alive. Generally, it’s placed in modern times, and the characters have to survive each round that they are forced to play.
